Songbird

Songbird is a play steeped in music that ebbs and flows with the life and memories of Migize, an Anishnaabe girl who attends a residential school and lives to become a mother, grandmother and young singer/songwriter and guitarist in 1960s Canada. The play begins at the end of her life and displays the trials and tribulations she goes through while coming to terms with her traumatic experience at residential school, the loss of her best friend to suicide, and the anger and hurt she feels towards the Canadian government and RCMP for attempting to “kill the Indian” in children like her. Music becomes her tool to escape. But can she heal?
