Organization Description

Paprika Festival is an award-winning performing arts festival offering year-round programs for emerging artists (ages 18-30) in the Greater Toronto Area with hands-on training and personalized mentorship. Participants work with professional artists and artworkers to develop their artistic practice and apply their learning in rehearsals and labs. Artists share their work with the public during a free week-long festival every May in a celebration of community, workshops, and free food in Regent Park.

Role Description

Reporting to the Associate Festival Producer and Artistic Producer, the Front of House Manager oversees front-facing elements of the 22nd annual Paprika Festival. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hand-on experience working in Front of House within a live performing arts festival. All candidates are encouraged to apply, but the ideal candidate will be an early-career, emerging arts worker with a passion for Festival work.  

Contract dates: April 22 - June 2 2024

Role:

  • Lead Usher Orientation during Tech Week (1 hour orientation between May 6-12, 2024)
  • Coordinate and correspond with Volunteers throughout Festival week (May 14-19, 2024)
  • Lead pre-show set up and strike, including safety check and theatre sweep, reserving seats, resetting theatre between productions
  • Set up and strike of lobby information table
  • Oversee the management of lobby information table throughout Festival, answering questions from public if necessary
  • Coordinating with the Production Stage Manager and Festival Box Office to open the house 15 minutes before each show begins.
  • Provide patrons with masks upon entry
  • Handing over the house to the Production Stage Manager when the audience is in the theatre and the Pre-show speech has concluded
  • Overseeing intermissions and volunteer usher breaks
  • Tracking number of patrons in the theatre and creating Front of House reports for every show
  • Collecting and providing the Festival Box Office the following information each day: # Late-comers, Clicker count, Ticket stub count, # of Turn-aways and Walkouts (and reason), Start time
  • Understanding emergency evacuation procedures and enacting if required
  • Must be under 30 years old to apply (funding-related requirement)
  • Must be available for the entire duration of festival May 14-19, 2024

Increases to role scope pending funding: 

  • Collect volunteer availability and create Volunteer Usher Schedule
  • Provide Festival Box Office and Production Manager with Volunteer Schedule and Contact List
  • Organizing a Volunteer Appreciation Event and Debrief between May 15 - May 25, 2024
